Program Mission

The mission of the Student Support Services (SSS) program at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is to meet the educational, social and personal needs of a diverse student population and to maximize their full academic potential. The SSS Program seeks to solve social, economic and educational problems of first-generation, income eligible and students with disabilities by providing group and individual support services.

Purpose and Goals

The purpose of the program is to increase graduation and retention rates among the population served. The goals of the program are to provide academic support services that help students develop skills that build classroom success, create a supportive learning environment, aid in developing an appreciation for diversity and expose students to cultural and social experiences that will promote the development and maintenance of self-esteem. The program is funded to serve 160 eligible students enrolled at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. To be eligible for the SSS program a student must meet at least one of the following criteria (1) neither of your parents has a 4-year degree, (2) you meet specific federal income guidelines and/or (3) you possess a documented disability.
